ALM in R 14 Apr 2014

The ALM application is now being used by other publishers. Since other publishers use this same application, we can access altmetrics data from all of them with a single client. rOpenSci has made an R client for interacting with the ALM application from R, called alm.

Most cited 2014 articles on Wikipedia 25 Feb 2014

Although we need access to the article metadata for complex queries, we can retrieve a set of most-recent or most-cited articles via the ALM API. The following Wikipedias were covered: English, Dutch, German, Swedish and French. This is not a complete set of 2014 articles, and some articles were published in 2013. HTML views and PDF downloads over time 23 Feb 2014

Usage data from the PLOS website for the article Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: The PRISMA Statement, published July 2009. This article shows the ratio of HTML views to PDF downloads typical for PLOS but is unusual in that the usage data start to increase two years after publication. Articles with Events from 10,000 Random DOIs 23 Feb 2014

Total number of articles with at least one event, using 10,000 random CrossRef DOIs from 2011 and 2012. This chart gives a good first impression of what percentage of articles that will have metrics from a paticular data source. Data generated live from almhack.crowdometer.org. Views vs. Citations for PLOS Biology Articles 11 Dec 2013

PLOS Biology 2010 Citation Counts 11 Dec 2013

Citation counts between journal articles vary widely within a journal, making the median (or mean) journal citation count a poor proxy for an individual article. A density plot rather than a histogram was used to better show the right skewed distribution. Source data in CSV format available here.
